These joints are cut or formed at least 1 inch deep—one-quarter of the slab depth—within 6 to 12 hours of finishing the surface, before random cracks have a chance to form.
For driveways in areas with particularly unstable soil or heavy-use situations (like a home on Turner Road near Woodbridge where multiple contractors may park during renovations), we may also recommend #4 Grade 60 rebar—1/2-inch-diameter steel reinforcing bar—placed in a grid pattern and tied at 18-inch intervals. This steel adds tensile strength and helps hold minor cracks tight even if the slab experiences differential settlement from soil movement.
Finishing and Curing: The Critical Hours
Once the concrete has been placed and screeded to grade, the real work begins. We monitor bleed water—the liquid that surfaces as the concrete begins to set. This is critical: starting power floating or troweling while bleed water is still on the surface creates a weak, dusty layer that will scale and deteriorate within months. In Lodi's hot weather, bleed water may evaporate in 15 minutes; in cool, humid conditions, it can take 2 hours or more. We wait patiently.

After finishing, we apply a membrane-forming curing compound to the entire surface. We typically recommend waiting 7 days before allowing normal vehicle traffic and 14 days before subjecting the slab to heavy loads or parking.
